Serik Akshulakov
Serik Akshulakov is a CEO of JSC “National Centre for Neurosurgery”, M.D., Professor, Academician of National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Laureate of State Prize of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Science and Technology, Enbek Eri (Hero of Labour of Kazakhstan), President of the Kazakh Association of neurosurgeons, Honorary member of Association of Neurosurgeons of Russia, member of Executive committee of the Asian Congress of Neurologic Surgeons, member of Neurotraumatology Committee of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies, member of Editorial Committee of Journal “Acta Neurochirurgica” of the European Association of Neurosurgeons, member of the Academia Eurasiana Neurochirurgica, member of the Editorial Board of the Journal “Pediatric Neurosurgery and Neurology” (Russia), member of the Editorial Board of the Journal “Epilepsy. Paroxysmal states” (Russia).
Serik Akshulakov was born on July 3, 1952, in the family of worker. He graduated from the medical faculty of the Aktobe State Medical Institute, then graduated clinical residency, post-graduate school and doctoral studies of the N.N. Burdenko Institute of Neurosurgery RAMS (Moscow). From 1996 to 2008, he worked as the head of the Department of Neurosurgery of the Almaty State Institute of Advanced Medical Studies. Since 2008, he has been managing the National Centre for Neurosurgery. Prof. Akshulakov performs the most complex neurosurgical surgery for tumors of the brain’s basal parts, brainstem, and brain ventricular system with using of operational microscope and microneurosurgery. He carried out more than 6,000 operations on the brain and spine. He introduced the basics of microneurosurgery, endoscopic neurosurgery (transnasal endoscopic approach, endoscopic surgery for brain edema), first used neuro-navigation in Kazakhstan, for the first time in Kazakhstan carried out surgical treatment of epilepsy. In 1998 and 2015 he was awarded the honorary title of Honored Worker of Kazakhstan. In 2001, 2005, 2010, 2015 - Certificates of Gratitude of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In 2005 became the winner of the highest independent award "Platinum Tarlan". In 2005 was awarded as "The Caring Doctor of the World" by the World Association of Doctors. In 2006 - medal "Winner of the All-Russia Exhibition Centre" of the All-Russia Exhibition Centre, Russia. In 2008 was awarded by a silver medal named after A. Baytursynov and was the winner of an award of Pirogov, Russia. In 2010 had the award Parasat of the President of Kazakhstan. In 2011, he won the republican contest "Outstanding Engineering Projects of Modern Kazakhstan" - the introduction of new technologies in the neurosurgery of the SIA RK. In 2012 - Laureate of the prize for quality, Switzerland, Laureate of the prize "Golden Endoscope", Germany, in 2013 - Laureate of the state prize of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the field of science and technology. In 2012 - the title “Asqaq Azamat”. In 2015 - the national prize “People’s Favorite 2015”. For outstanding achievements in the economic and socio-humanitarian development of the Republic of Kazakhstan in 2016 he was awarded the state award - the title of Hero of Labour of Kazakhstan (“Qazaqstan Enbek Yeri”) - with the award of a special distinction - the Golden Star and the Order “Otan”.
More than 60 new technologies that have not been previously implemented in Kazakhstan were introduced under the guidance and direct participation of Prof. Akshulakov. He supervised 25 candidate and 5 doctoral dissertations, more than 30 clinical residents and residents. Over 300 scientific papers have been published (80 of them in foreign journals), including 19 monographs. He is the author of 16 patents. Serik Akshulakov is the organizer of the I, II, III, IV Congresses of Neurosurgeons of Kazakhstan with international participation, Educational courses of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies, Educational courses of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies, the International Forum of Neurosurgeons, as well as the 10th Asian Congress of Neurological Surgeons, in which 700 foreign experts participated from 56 countries of the world.
